Thai Massage
Thai massage is the most beautiful form of bodywork that I have encountered. At its best, it becomes a meditative healing dance orchestrated by the practitioner and experienced by the client. Flowing movement, rhythmic breathing, and gentle rocking facilitate deep relaxation and re-balancing of energy patterns in the body. Depending on the flexibility of the client, a sequence of postures are chosen by the Thai Massage Therapist to increase the range of motion creating a greater sense of ease and freedom.
Thai massage has been preserved in sacred temples in Thailand for over 2000 years. It's origins are attributed to Jivaka, the physician to the Buddha and is theoretically centered in Indian Ayurvedic medicine, Taoist medicine, and Buddhist meditation. The stillness of the mind of the practitioner and the ability to be sensitive to energy flow (prana) is the central focus in Thai massage bodywork.
For the practitioner, Thai massage is a spiritual practice performed in the state of Metta (compassionate kindness) and dedicated to the essence of oneness that connects all of us.
Nurturing touch is essential for optimal health. A lack of sensitive and kind touch can contribute to an increase in feelings of disconnection and alienation from self and world. Caring bodywork can help us to reconnect with the internal rhythms leading to increased health and well being. Being in the flow with the natural order of life ultimately creates a more harmonious and joyful participation in the world.
What to expect
Thai massage is performed on a comfortable mat on the floor. The client wears loose, comfortable clothing such as track pants and a long sleeved top. No oils are used. In the first session, you can expect to discuss relevant concerns while filling out an intake questionnaire.
The session begins with focusing on the breath and there may be some instruction on unconstrained breathing technique. Thai massage is a total body treatment, however, areas of discomfort, tightness, or blocked energy flow may be focused on throughout the session.
